Elevate Your Knowledge. Explore the Drone World

Higher education in drones is climbing fast — and it’s not just about learning to fly; it’s about mastering an entire ecosystem of emerging technology. Across the country, colleges and universities are launching specialized programs that cover way more than joystick skills. Students can now pursue associate degrees, bachelor’s programs, and even advanced master’s degrees focused on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), drone engineering, and aerial data science.

These programs dig deep into cutting-edge fields like autonomous flight systems, advanced aeronautics, robotics integration, geospatial mapping, and the critical maze of airspace laws and FAA regulations that keep commercial operations compliant and safe. And it’s not just classroom theory — students log real flight hours, tackle hands-on projects with industry-standard drones and sensors, complete internships with top companies, and earn must-have credentials like the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

Graduates don’t just leave with a diploma — they step into a job market hungry for skilled drone pilots, aerial surveyors, GIS analysts, inspection specialists, and even drone software developers. Industries like precision agriculture, renewable energy, construction, environmental monitoring, filmmaking, and emergency response all need talent who can translate drone data into real-world solutions.

Bottom line? Drones aren’t toys — they’re high-tech tools driving the next wave of innovation and efficiency. Higher ed is the launchpad for students ready to plug into this future, take flight, and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving airspace where the sky is far from the limit.

The University of Alaska Board of Regents established the Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration (ACUASI) in 2012 to lead all unmanned aircraft programs for the entire University of Alaska system. ACUASI oversees flight test range facilities in sixteen states and territories. ACUASI supports research and test activities related to public operations, civil/commercial operations, mixed manned and unmanned operations, high altitude long endurance (HALE), and high-altitude balloon operations.
